Northwest Missouri Music Educators Association
Jazz Band

Dear Fellow Music Educators,

It is with great excitement that I write to you about the upcoming jazz events in the Northwest District #1! We will once again be auditioning two full jazz ensembles: one middle school group and one high school group. The Middle School Jazz Band will be comprised of 7th and 8th grade students and will be directed by Dave Kobberdahl, Band and Jazz Band Teacher in the West Des Moines School District. The High School Jazz Band will be comprised of 9th-12th grade students and will be directed by Dr. David Aaberg, Director of Jazz-Commercial Music at the University of Central Missouri.

The date of the auditions will be the same as with the concert band auditions, November 4th 2017. They will take place at Central High School in St. Joseph, MO. Registration will be done online through the www.nwmmea.net page by signing in and clicking on the Jazz Band link. REGISTRATION FOR AUDITIONS MUST BE COMPLETED BY OCTOBER 27TH!

A complete audition for the Middle School Jazz Band is as follows:

  1. Chromatic scale (at least one octave)
  2. Playing the Head and an improvised solo for both "C Jam Blues" AND "Autumn Leaves" from the Essential Elements Jazz Play-along: Jazz Standards book. Rhythm section students should play the Head, then walk or comp a chorus, and THEN improvise. Drummers should play time and comp in left hand.

*Students WILL play along with the recorded tracks.

A complete audition for the High School Jazz Band is as follows:

  1. Playing the Head and an improvised solo for "Now Hear This!" from Blues In All Keys by Jamie Abersold, vol. 42. Rhythm section students should play the Head, then walk or comp a chorus, and THEN improvise. Drummers should play time and comp in left hand
  2. Playing the Head and an improvised solo for "On The Trail" from Approaching the Standards by Willie L. Hill Jr., vol. 1. Rhythm section students should play the Head, then walk or comp a chorus, and THEN improvise. Drummers should play time and comp in left hand
  3. Playing both the "MOAJE Swing Etude 2" AND "MOAJE Latin Etude 2" from the beginning to the downbeat of ms. 17. This music can be found at moaje.org by clicking on the All-State Jazz Band link and then Set 2 Audition Music link.

*Students will play along with the appropriate recorded tracks ("Full Rhythm MP3" for wind players and "MP3 instrument muted") for the different rhythm instruments.
**Drummers will play the following grooves: Jazz Waltz, Samba, Shuffle, Funk. Examples can be found at the following link: http://moaje.org/documents/State Drumset Patterns.pdf
If your students are selected into either ensemble they will be required to come back to Central High School on Wednesday, November 15th for a rehearsal from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. The high school band will rehearse in the Band Room and the middle school band in the Choir Room. Failure to be at the rehearsal will jeopardize the student's position in the District Jazz Band as well as their ability to audition for the State Jazz Band.
The District Jazz Clinic/Concert will be held on Saturday, November 18th at Missouri Western State University Potter Hall. Registration will begin at 8:00 AM and rehearsals start at 8:30 AM. The concert is open to the public and will start at 5:00 PM in the Potter Hall Theatre. It will feature the District Middle School Jazz Band, District High School Jazz Band and the MWSU Jazz Ensemble.

I wish you all the best of luck at the beginning of this school year and look forward to seeing you at auditions in November!

Musically,

Chad Lippincott
